Samsung ISOCELL image sensor likely to star in the Galaxy S5

Samsung has unveiled its latest CMOS image sensor, promising substantially increased light sensitivity. Dubbed ISOCELL, Samsung says its new imager produces photos with higher color fidelity thanks to its improved control of electron absorption.

The company states that all of these enhancements make the ISOCELL CMOS sensor suitable for its upcoming line of smartphones and tablets. As a result, it wouldn't be at all surprising to see the Samsung Galaxy S5 camera feature an ISOCELL image sensor.
The ISOCELL image sensor is the result of consumer desire for increased camera resolution as well as the quality of the photos without making the camera overly large. Pixels need to get smaller while at the same time preserving their performance. Samsung camera gurus compare the ISOCELL technology to FSI and BSI sensors in their inability to preserve pixel quality while shrinking its size at the same time.

Previous sensor technology developments focused on improving the light absorption of each pixel, and have progressed pixel technology from FSI (Front Side Illumination) to BSI (Back Side Illumination) which places photodiode at the top to maximize photoelectric efficiency. While being very effective at the time, this BSI technology also faced limitations in improving image quality as pixel sizes continued to decrease.

The first Samsung image sensor to adopt the new ISOCELL technology carries the model number S5K4H5YB and is an 8MP one with 1.12μ ISOCELL pixel size. The sensor is currently being sampled by Samsung customers and is expected to hit mass production in Q4 2013.

Potential buyers of the freshly announced Sony Xperia Z1 in the UK will surely find this deal difficult to resist. Sony's Android smartphone flagship is offered for pre-order with a free QX10 lens by the British retailer Carphone Warehouse.

The combo is available for both new and upgrade customers. It is offered on a variety of plans by all major UK carriers. Along with the free camera lens, users will also get £65 worth of content which includes top five movies, exclusive movie access pass, and two months of free music streaming.

HTC One will get Android 4.3 in end of September

iOS 7 beta 5 is now out for devs, reportedly more stable

Only a week after beta 4 was released, we welcome beta 5 of the upcoming iOS7. As usual, there is no public changelog, so we are on our own to spot the differences.
Early birds report they are experiencing a much smoother sailing with this one even though start-up times are noticeably longer. Also, all settings icons are now redesigned, along with the in-call icons and the slide-to-power-off slider (left is new).

The new beta is available as an Over-The-Air update if you use a developer-registered device.

Motorola Moto X goes live with X8 chipset, 4.7" AMOLED screen 

Motorola’s back on the scene with a brand new handset called Moto X, the company’s first flagship since being acquired by Google. It’s a beautiful, thoughtful, innovative device that offers iterative features of other Android phones in the past, yet it brings them together under one unified umbrella. Starting off with the hardware, the phone sports a 4.7-inch display, though you might not notice it because of how small the bezels around and below the screen actually are. This lets normal consumers, the ones that don’t care about screen size, or tinkering (as much) experience a big and beautiful display, without sacrificing comfort.
Speaking of comfort, the phone practically melts away in your hand. It’s curved, with rounded edges all of the way around and feels very much like how the iPhone 3G did, except thinner and flatter — this is a good thing. Once you pick up the Moto X you don’t want to put it down. You just want to tap, tap, tap on the display, which itself is gorgeous — as it should be — and it’s refreshing to finally see a Motorola phone that doesn’t look a pixelated PenTile mess.
Some of the key features that Motorola focused on during the company’s presentation earlier today were touchless control, active display, and Moto Maker. Let’s focus on touchless control first. It operates much like how it sounds and you can interact with your phone in specific ways without touching it, for instance when it’s in your car and you’re driving. By saying, “OK Google Now” followed by a command, the phone will instantly activate, turn the display on, and listen to what you said. By making the phone always listen to that certain phrase, you’re able to get navigation directions, set your alarm, Google something, check the weather, and call someone, among many other things, all without ever looking at it.
While it does work quite well in the very limited amount of time I’ve used the phone that Motorola provided me (a black AT&T version), it doesn’t go nearly as deep as Apple’s Siri. You can’t check your text messages, emails, respond to messages, add calendar appointments, check your calendar, and find out where your friends are to name a few. But Google Now in general has always worked better than Siri for the functions it performs, so by combining this with the fact you don’t need to actually touch your phone, it’s a powerful feature and one I’m sure we are going to see expanded upon in the near future.
Active display is an interesting feature that lets you check key information on your phone without unlocking it or even pressing the power button. The time will display whenever you pull your phone out of your pocket or take it out of a bag, and your notification icons will be shown to let you know if you have any missed messages or calls. You can even drill into the most important notification (as determined by Android’s OS) without unlocking your phone by sliding up on an icon in the center of the screen. I haven’t had much time to play around with active display, but it seems to work well in my limited use.
Last, let’s look at Moto Maker. It’s an ingenious concept that allows consumers to order not just the exact phone they want right to their doorstep, but the ability to customize it in thousands of different ways. You can choose from two front colors, white and black, 18 back colors, 7 accent colors (metal around the camera lens, the buttons on the phone), the ability to put your name or text on the back of the phone, have your phone pre-setup with your Google ID, pick your wallpaper, write a custom message that appears when you turn the phone on, and choose your storage size of 16GB or 32GB. Motorola is promising that all phones will be delivered within 4 days of placing the order, and that this is all possible because of how the company how overhauled their supply chain and is assembling all U.S. smartphones in Texas.
There’s so much more to touch on, like the amazing camera that seems to be so good it can stop motion for the perfect shot or the fastest Wi-Fi in a smartphone with 802.11ac, but that is going to have to wait for our full review. But in the meantime, in my limited time using and learning about this smartphone, this could be the Android phone consumers have been waiting for.

Sony updates Xperia Z and Xperia ZL, improves performance

A month back on June 24, Xperia Z was officially update to  Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean 10.3.A.0.423 firmware and some days back we saw another Jelly Bean 10.3.1.A.0.236  firmware OTA update being rolled on Xperia Z but only on developer handsets, which was a lot curious why such a firmware was rolled and users reporting it were very few.


But now, in INDIA region, we have just spotted another 10.3.1.A.0.244 firmware on our Xperia Z C6602 HSPA+ version via PC Companion as well as via SUS. No such update is seen listed on PTCRB site also. Update also confirmed on Xperia Z C6603 LTE version now.
10.3.1.A.0.244 firmware update confirmed in India, Sweden, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Poland till now. Same 10.3.1.A.0.244 firmware update is also confirmed on Xperia ZL C6503.

We can confirm that 10.3.1.A.0.244 firmware update for Xperia Z C6602 is just a patch update of Android 4.2.2  Sony must have patched the perf_event exploit. So Root from previous 10.3.A.0.423 firmware will now be lost sadly.

XDA Developer DooMLoRD has just tweeted that all Xperia Z / ZL users who have rooted handset, shouldn’t flash this 10.3.1.A.0.244 firmware ftf file directly. They should use OTA ROOT KEEPER, otherwise root will be lost in this new firmware. 

How to keep Root in Xperia Z, ZL Android 4.2.2 10.3.1.A.0.244 firmware update ?
If you are updating your Xperia Z, ZL directly via Flashtool, everything in (the /system partition) gets formatted completely, so you loose root :/ So update it over OTA to keep root.

Root Access will be lost, if flashing via FlashTool.

At Current Pace, Tablets Will Outsell PCs By Q2 2014

The PC market is in poor health, and consumers love tablets. When do those two trends cross? No prediction is perfect, but given simple trend analysis, it appears that by the second quarter of 2014, tablets will likely outsell the PC market.
That said, current market dynamics could accelerate, pushing us over that mark a bit sooner. Let’s get into the figures to untangle just where we stand.
The Next Web’s Emil Protalinksi broke down the most recent tablet sales figures, using data served by Strategy Analytics. The rough picture is that in the second quarter of 2012, according to the firm’s analysis, 51.7 million tablets were shipped globally. That figure is up from 36.1 million in the second quarter of 2012.
How does that compare to the vanilla PC market? As was reported at the time, second-quarter PC shipments totaled around 76 million units. Other estimates had the figure at 75.5 million, but that’s close enough for this sort of comparison.
The simple story is that the PC market is slipping, down 11 percent year over year in the most recent quarter, while tablets are up sharply. In the past year, from the second quarter of 2012 to the second quarter of 2013, tablet shipments were up around 43 percent. Much of that growth was in the Android segment, it’s worth noting. Microsoft managed to put marks on the board as well, but as Apple’s tablet products find market saturation, Android appears to be the key growth platform for the touch-computing niche.
IDC raised its recent PC market decline prediction from 1.3 percent for 2013 to 7.8 percent. That still feels optimistic. Here are some simple numbers: Assuming that the PC market declines another 11 percent in the coming year, and the tablet market manages, let’s say, 30 percent growth in the next 12 months, we end up with 67.6 million shipped PCs and 67.2 million shipped tablets. Those numbers presume that tablet growth slows in the next four quarters compared to earlier rates.
In a separate estimate, IDC concludes that tablet shipments will grow as much as 59 percent in calendar 2013. At that pace, and assuming that the PC market doesn’t dramatically improve, the lines simply meet sooner. At current tally, IDC itself predicts tablets will overtake PCs in 2015, but their PC estimates in that case feel far too optimistic, though Microsoft would prefer them.
PC shipments were down 14 percent year over year in the first quarter of 2013, and 11 percent down the next. That trend is north of painful.
So even assuming that tablet growth is slower than IDC expects, and that PC shipments simply continue their current pace of decline, by the second quarter of 2014, tablets and PCs will ship similar unit volumes. We’re not post-PC yet, but we are certainly almost at PC-tablet parity, and that’s a real market change.

Snapdragon 600-powered Galaxy Note II officially announced by China Mobile

The Snapdragon 600-powered Samsung Galaxy Note II that leaked some days ago is the real deal. The sped-up version was just announced by China Mobile, the largest carrier in China. The device is designated N7108D.


The new Samsung Galaxy Note II looks virtually identical to the original with a 5.5" 720p Super AMOLED touchscreen and S Pen, but the new chipset adds TD-LTE, FDD-LTE and TD-SCDMA alongside regular WCDMA and GSM.


And, of course, the new quad-core Krait 300 CPU wipes the floor with the old quad-core Cortex-A9 as does the Adreno 320 GPU with the Mali-400. According to benchmarks (there's no official word) the CPU is clocked at 1.9GHz and there's 2GB RAM. The Samsung Galaxy N7108D Note II runs Android 4.2.2 with TouchWiz.
There's no indication if this redesigned Note II will make its way to other countries or not – the Galaxy Note III with Snapdragon 800 (and 3GB RAM) should be officially unveiled at IFA this September. The screen size seems to be in flux though.

Sony i1 “Honami” and Xperia Z comparison

On Monday we managed to get our hands on some exclusive pictures of the Sony Xperia i1 ‘Honami‘ Android-running smartphone and they were some very revealing shots which showed just what the incoming handset will look like. Well today we have got a few more snaps for you as we take a look at the camera interface to the handset.
As the images show, Sony will be keeping much of the design aspects of the Xperia Z in the new handset with the two devices sharing the large glass screen with straight-edged design. The handsets stack up pretty similar to each other in size but the Honami is slightly longer than its sibling handset.

The shots also reveal some info on the much talked about 20 megapixel camera and the interface it uses. Still we haven’t been able to confirm if the camera is the rumoured 20 megapixel beast but the interface of the i1 does show some big changes.
First up is the picture mode selection screen which has features such as Superior Auto and Manual, which have featured on other Sony models. Timeshift burst is also detailed in an images, which looks like a feature which will be taking on BlackBerry’s TimeShift feature from BlackBerry 10.
 
Picture effect adds a host of filters and effects to an image and can be seen in an inventive selection screen.
But the most interesting of the features looks to be the AR Effect feature, which by the look of the images seems to superimpose an Augmented Reality situation onto your images – in this case a brilliant looking dinosaur-filled pre-historic landscape is overlaid on the viewfinder.

Other modes detailed but not captured include Social Live, which we’re told allows you to “Broadcast live video to Facebook”, Info-Eye which is apparently a Nokia LiveSight type of feature where you can use you camera and to see more information about your surroundings, and finally Sweep Panorama mode which is fairly self explanatory.

Sony Unviels Android 4.3 update List

So, Sony’s Jelly Bean 4.2 upgrade for Xperia Z and Xperia ZL is well underway* – next up, Xperia ZR and Xperia Tablet Z will start receiving 4.2 from early August.
Yesterday you probably saw Google announce the next version of Jelly Bean (Android 4.3) – we’re already getting stuck in and can confirm we’ll make 4.3 available for: Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia SP and Xperia Z Ultra…
We’re also looking at uplifting some of our other devices running 4.1 direct to 4.3 – we’ll share more info / deets / timings when we can, so be sure to follow @SonyMobileNews for all the latest.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra gets caught in the wild, UI is unchanged

The soon-to-be-announced Sony Xperia ZU (standing for Z Ultra) has appeared in a photo taken in the wild. That's not the first time we take a glimpse of Sony's first phablet, but it's the first time we see its 6.44-inch display turned on.
Just like the Xperia Z, the Xperia Z Ultra will have a Nexus-like trio of on-screen buttons at the bottom of its full HD display. The purported photo of the smartphone above might very well be fabricated, but it looks pretty convincing to us.
We've already seen Sony's hint of the Xperia Z Ultra (codenamed Togari) in the official press invitation, confirming the device will feature a really thin profile, but we don't yet know how the sheer size of the smartphone will affect its weight.
Regardless, the photo voids a rumor from yesterday, which suggested Sony is going to make some changes to the way its custom UI looked with Android 4.2. Seeing from the photo above, that couldn't be further from the truth, as the Xperia Z Ultra seems to look in line with previous versions of the UI.

Sony Xperia A to debut on NTT DoCoMo on May 15

Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo is preparing to hold its latest product announcement on May 15 and one of the smartphones believed to be on display is the Sony Xperia A. In fact, it has gone through the FCC for approval and has had some of its specs leaked.

The handset pans out to be yet another high-end addition to Sony's 2013 line-up and takes similar features from the Xperia Z. One of them is the 5" display packing 1080p resolution. The Xperia A sports Sony's OmniBalance design and many will be happy to know that the 2300mAh battery is removable.

The power button on the right side is reminiscent of the Xperia Z's, as is the 13MP snapper at the back. The NTT DoCoMo bound smartphone is LTE enabled and features 16GB of built-in storage, but we are yet to known if it's expandable.

The Sony Xperia A in the flesh
Actually, one of the main features of the Xperia A still remains unknown and that's its CPU. The smartphone is likely to pack Xperia Z's S4 Pro chip. Happily, we won't have to wait much longer to find out, as NTT DoCoMo's summer lineup will be showcased on May 15. We'll have more details then.

Android 4.3 running on several devices already, server logs show

When Google I/O is underway, there’s usually some new Android version waiting to be unveiled. Despite all the murmurs about Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie, this I/O might bring just 4.3 Jelly Bean.
The version number first showed up in logs of the Android Police website and now Android Authority is reporting its server logs show visits from Android 4.3 devices. They seem to run newer builds than the JWR23B that visited AP (note: the first letter of the build number matches the first letter of the codename).

But more interesting is the list of device names that run version 4.3. There’s the Nexus 4 phone, the older Galaxy Nexus, the two Google tablets, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10. Then there are two surprising entries - a yet to be announced Huawei U8819 and a rather low-end Pantech Breakout (listed as ADR8995).
The Breakout packs a single-core 1GHz processor and just 512MB of RAM. If that’s enough oomph for Android 4.3 then the news should be good as far as the eligibility for upgrades of old devices is concerned (it would fall to the manufacturer).
It’s interesting that the Pantech reported it’s running Android 4.3.1 Key Lime Pie so there is a chance the new version of the OS will get a new name, but it could just be an eager dev putting in the wrong name in the build.
Google I/O starts in two weeks, but the two-day keynote has been cut down to a single day, which potentially means no groundbreaking changes (and no 5.0).
