Sony Xperia Z1 is offered with a free QX10 lens in UK

Potential buyers of the freshly announced Sony Xperia Z1 in the UK will surely find this deal difficult to resist. Sony's Android smartphone flagship is offered for pre-order with a free QX10 lens by the British retailer Carphone Warehouse.

Sony updates Xperia Z and Xperia ZL, improves performance

A month back on June 24, Xperia Z was officially update to  Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean 10.3.A.0.423 firmware and some days back we saw another Jelly Bean 10.3.1.A.0.236  firmware OTA update being rolled on Xperia Z but only on developer handsets, which was a lot curious why such a firmware was rolled and users reporting it were very few.


But now, in INDIA region, we have just spotted another 10.3.1.A.0.244 firmware on our Xperia Z C6602 HSPA+ version via PC Companion as well as via SUS. No such update is seen listed on PTCRB site also. Update also confirmed on Xperia Z C6603 LTE version now.
10.3.1.A.0.244 firmware update confirmed in India, Sweden, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Poland till now. Same 10.3.1.A.0.244 firmware update is also confirmed on Xperia ZL C6503.

We can confirm that 10.3.1.A.0.244 firmware update for Xperia Z C6602 is just a patch update of Android 4.2.2  Sony must have patched the perf_event exploit. So Root from previous 10.3.A.0.423 firmware will now be lost sadly.

XDA Developer DooMLoRD has just tweeted that all Xperia Z / ZL users who have rooted handset, shouldn’t flash this 10.3.1.A.0.244 firmware ftf file directly. They should use OTA ROOT KEEPER, otherwise root will be lost in this new firmware. 

How to keep Root in Xperia Z, ZL Android 4.2.2 10.3.1.A.0.244 firmware update ?
If you are updating your Xperia Z, ZL directly via Flashtool, everything in (the /system partition) gets formatted completely, so you loose root :/ So update it over OTA to keep root.

Root Access will be lost, if flashing via FlashTool.

Use OTA RootKeeper, if you want to have root access remain to your phone. If you are updating your Xperia Z, ZL by “Update Center” app, then using OTA RootKeeper, you can save your root access.

Sony i1 “Honami” and Xperia Z comparison

On Monday we managed to get our hands on some exclusive pictures of the Sony Xperia i1 ‘Honami‘ Android-running smartphone and they were some very revealing shots which showed just what the incoming handset will look like. Well today we have got a few more snaps for you as we take a look at the camera interface to the handset.
As the images show, Sony will be keeping much of the design aspects of the Xperia Z in the new handset with the two devices sharing the large glass screen with straight-edged design. The handsets stack up pretty similar to each other in size but the Honami is slightly longer than its sibling handset.

The shots also reveal some info on the much talked about 20 megapixel camera and the interface it uses. Still we haven’t been able to confirm if the camera is the rumoured 20 megapixel beast but the interface of the i1 does show some big changes.
First up is the picture mode selection screen which has features such as Superior Auto and Manual, which have featured on other Sony models. Timeshift burst is also detailed in an images, which looks like a feature which will be taking on BlackBerry’s TimeShift feature from BlackBerry 10.
 
Picture effect adds a host of filters and effects to an image and can be seen in an inventive selection screen.
But the most interesting of the features looks to be the AR Effect feature, which by the look of the images seems to superimpose an Augmented Reality situation onto your images – in this case a brilliant looking dinosaur-filled pre-historic landscape is overlaid on the viewfinder.

Other modes detailed but not captured include Social Live, which we’re told allows you to “Broadcast live video to Facebook”, Info-Eye which is apparently a Nokia LiveSight type of feature where you can use you camera and to see more information about your surroundings, and finally Sweep Panorama mode which is fairly self explanatory.

Sony Unviels Android 4.3 update List

So, Sony’s Jelly Bean 4.2 upgrade for Xperia Z and Xperia ZL is well underway* – next up, Xperia ZR and Xperia Tablet Z will start receiving 4.2 from early August.
Yesterday you probably saw Google announce the next version of Jelly Bean (Android 4.3) – we’re already getting stuck in and can confirm we’ll make 4.3 available for: Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia SP and Xperia Z Ultra…
We’re also looking at uplifting some of our other devices running 4.1 direct to 4.3 – we’ll share more info / deets / timings when we can, so be sure to follow @SonyMobileNews for all the latest.

Sony introduces dual-core Xperia M and Xperia M dual

Sony Xperia M has just gone official. It packs a 4.0-inch TFT display of FWVGA resolution and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus chipset featuring a 1GHz dual-core Krait processor, Adreno 305 graphics and 1GB of RAM.
Sony Xperia M also comes with a 5MP camera using an Exmor RS sensor and capable of 720p video recording, a 0.3MP front snapper for video chats, and 4 GB of expandable storage.

The Sony Xperia M connectivity package includes dual-band Wi-Fi, 3G with HSPA, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and FM radio. Sony is advertising the Xperia M as a phone with "magical one-touch functions" thanks to its NFC connectivity and dedicated sharing apps.
Sony Xperia M runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with Sony's proprietary skin on top of it. It will be available in four color versions - Black, White, Purple and Lime.
A dual-SIM version of Xperia M is also going to be available. The Xperia M dual has the same specs, except for the extra SIM slot and the lack of Lime color option.
Both Xperia M and Xperia M dual will hit the shelves in Q3 this year, but their pricing is yet to be announced.

Sony Xperia A to debut on NTT DoCoMo on May 15

Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo is preparing to hold its latest product announcement on May 15 and one of the smartphones believed to be on display is the Sony Xperia A. In fact, it has gone through the FCC for approval and has had some of its specs leaked.

The handset pans out to be yet another high-end addition to Sony's 2013 line-up and takes similar features from the Xperia Z. One of them is the 5" display packing 1080p resolution. The Xperia A sports Sony's OmniBalance design and many will be happy to know that the 2300mAh battery is removable.

The power button on the right side is reminiscent of the Xperia Z's, as is the 13MP snapper at the back. The NTT DoCoMo bound smartphone is LTE enabled and features 16GB of built-in storage, but we are yet to known if it's expandable.

The Sony Xperia A in the flesh
Actually, one of the main features of the Xperia A still remains unknown and that's its CPU. The smartphone is likely to pack Xperia Z's S4 Pro chip. Happily, we won't have to wait much longer to find out, as NTT DoCoMo's summer lineup will be showcased on May 15. We'll have more details then.

Sony Xperia J unexpectedly gets Jelly Bean update

The Sony Xperia J is getting updated to Android 4.1.2. This has not been officially announced by Sony, but users of the device have reported receiving the update OTA. If you haven't, check manually for a software update or you can hook up to Sony Companion using your PC and handset. Normally the announcement of a software update doesn't shock us so much that we could be knocked over by a feather. But one look at the specs of the Sony Xperia J and you will understand.

There is nothing in the screen size, at 4 inches, that is unusual here. The 480 x 854 resolution provides a pixel density of 245ppi. But we are dealing with a phone that has just a single-core 1GHz processor with just 512MB of RAM. Heck, there are phones with those specs that can't even get updated from Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich (Hey Motorola, remember the Motorola DROID 3?) and here we are talking about Jelly Bean!

The update for the Sony Xperia J weighs in at 392MB which means that it will use some time to install. Make sure your battery is charged to at least 50% and that you have a strong Wi-Fi signal. And be prepared for the wonders of Android 4.1.2 like Project Butter, Google Now and the enhanced notifications page. It should feel like a brand new phone afterward.

Sony Announces 4.1.2 Jelly Bean Update For Xperia TL and AT&T

Reports seem to be popping up at XDA and AT&T’s community Forums, about an incoming update for the Sony Xperia TL. The update is moving the TL to Jelly Bean 4.1.2. It doesn’t seem to be coming through as an OTA though, at least not yet anyways, rather it being prompted for installations through the PC Companion. Talks of a much faster experience, some camera tweaks with a HDR setting and probably plenty of other hidden little goodies are inside. AT&T’s site doesn’t offer up any news on there being an update available. As you can see int he screen shot below. They probably just haven’t gotten around to updating their information. Sony has made the announcement on their site about it being out since yesterday.
However there is confirmation that Jelly Bean is available through two posts in their community forums. Right alongside having to do factory resets after updating to make things work again. Let us know if you see an OTA version JB pop up for your TL, or even if you can get it through the PC Companion app.

Sony Xperia C680X test scores hint at 1080p screen, 4.2 Jelly Bean

Sony unveiled its first two flagship Androids for the year early on at CES – the C660X Xperia Z and C650X Xperia ZL – but there seems to be another high-ender on the way, the Sony C680X.
The model name cropped up at html5test.com, a website that benchmarks a browser’s compatibility with the HTML5 standards. The browser was running on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean device with a 1080p screen. Unfortunately, we don’t know how big that screen was.


We checked the other usual sources (Picasa, GLBenchmark, NenaMark, Indonesia’s Postel) for more info on the device but there’s nothing yet.
Considering that the difference between the C650X Xperia ZL and C660X Xperia Z is mostly in the external shell (different dimensions and waterproofing), how much different can the C680X Xperia be? And will there be a C670X?
We might find out at the MWC, but seeing how late the first leak about the C680X is, we don’t think it’s particularly likely. The C210X Xperia L and C530X Xperia SP are more likely candidates to be at Sony’s booth at the show.

Sony Xperia Z has been the talk of the town ever since its announcement at CES. The smartphone has a powerful chipset, gorgeous screen, it’s waterproof and scratch-resistant, but its cool features don’t end there.

Sony Xperia Z’s camera is one of the strong performers in the package. According to Sony, the smartphone has the ability to take unlimited number of 9MP images at 10 frames per second, but a real-life test has shown it to do even better.
