Google has just announced via a blog post that it will be offering free, faster Wi-Fi hotspots at all U.S. company-operated Starbucks locations, which will get up and running sometime within the next 18 months. Google says that its speeds should beat the existing hotspots at the coffee shops by at least 10x, and in Google Fiber cities like Kansas, that should jump to a 100-fold boost.
The first Starbucks Wi-Fi hotspots will start rolling out in August, so there’s not long to wait. The way to tell if your location is switched over will be looking for a “Google Starbuck” network SSID name from your device. Google has already rolled out free Wi-Fi access in the Mountain View community surrounding its HQ, and has partnered with Boingo in the past to offer free access at a variety of locations. Recently, it also offered San Francisco a considerable sum to set up free access in public spaces, with a rollout planned for completion in April, 2014 pending approvals.

WebKit is a lightweight yet powerful rendering engine that emerged out of KHTML in 2001. Its flexibility, performance and thoughtful design made it the obvious choice for Chromium's rendering engine back when we started. Thanks to the hard work by all in the community, WebKit has thrived and kept pace with the web platform’s growing capabilities since then.

However, Chromium uses a different multi-process architecture than other WebKit-based browsers, and supporting multiple architectures over the years has led to increasing complexity for both the WebKit and Chromium projects. This has slowed down the collective pace of innovation - so today, we are introducing Blink, a new open source rendering engine based on WebKit.

This was not an easy decision. We know that the introduction of a new rendering engine can have significant implications for the web. Nevertheless, we believe that having multiple rendering engines—similar to having multiple browsers—will spur innovation and over time improve the health of the entire open web ecosystem.

In the short term, Blink will bring little change for web developers. The bulk of the initial work will focus on internal architectural improvements and a simplification of the codebase. For example, we anticipate that we’ll be able to remove 7 build systems and delete more than 7,000 files—comprising more than 4.5 million lines—right off the bat. Over the long term a healthier codebase leads to more stability and fewer bugs.

Throughout this transition, we’ll collaborate closely with other browser vendors to move the web forward and preserve the compatibility that made it a successful ecosystem. Google will refresh its Nexus 7 tablet this summer, launching a new version powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor around July, according to Reuters – which is about a year after it launched the original Nexus 7. The news agency said two unnamed sources also told it Google is aiming to ship between six and eight million of the tablets in the second half of the year.
Google has not released official sales figures for its $199 to $249 slate, which is made by Asus, but an analyst estimate pegged sales for 2012 at between 4.5 million and 4.8 million, suggesting Mountain View is hoping to grow Nexus 7 sales significantly this year – even by as much as almost double.
According to Reuters’ sources, the forthcoming version of the Nexus 7 will get some hardware improvements, with a higher screen resolution and a thinner bezel design both being mentioned. It will also use Qualcomm’s chipset in place of Nvidia’s Tegra 3 which was used in the original Nexus 7s. Qualcomm’s chip was chosen over Nvidia’s for “power reasons”, according to one of the sources. The slate will continue to be co-branded with Asus.
If Google is hoping to significantly ramp up Nexus 7 sales it’s possible it will drop the price to encourage adoption but Reuters’ sources said pricing is “yet to be determined and Google’s plans are fluid”. One option is for Google to retain the $199 entry level price. Another is to price the slate even lower, at $149, according to one of the sources. The old model would be discontinued. A key factor that could determine how Google ultimately decides to price the Nexus 7 is if Apple launches new iPads this year.
Reuters goes on to quote Fubon Securities analyst Arthur Liao noting that a ”zero-margin strategy” plays to Google’s core business strengths — underlining the reasons for Google to push the Nexus 7 price lower. “Ninety-seven percent of Google’s revenue comes from advertisement, so it needs to sell more mobile devices in order to reach more consumers,” he told the news agency.
Last fall Amazon refreshed its Kindle Fire line-up of tablets, including dropping the price of the old model to $159. So a $149 Nexus 7 would undercut Amazon’s cheapest slate — at least, for now. Last month Amazon was rumoured to be working on building a $99 tablet – a rumour the company denied, telling TechCrunch:  “We are already at the lowest price points possible for that hardware.”

Google Nexus 4 goes on sale in Brazil for R$ 1,699

Google has launched the Nexus 4 smartphone in Brazil. The phone will be sold through Fast Shop and Ponto Frio, unlocked.

Unfortunately, there is no option to purchase the phone through the Google Play Store in Brazil. What's worse is that the phone is priced at R$ 1,699, which is roughly equivalent to US $844, significantly more than the $349 price in the US Play Store.
Still, if you wanted to purchase the phone through official channels, you at least have an option now. Not sure how many people would be interested at that price, though.

Small nubs now lift the back of the phone up off a table; camera lens gets a slight redesign

Android Central has confirmed that the Nexus 4 has undergone a little bit of a design tweak. As first reported by German site MobiFlip. there are now a couple of small nubs on the rear of the phone, where the glass meets the foot, positioned just above the two screw holes.
We've confirmed the change on a pair of Nexus 4s we ordered on Monday this week and received on Wednesday. In the image above, our original Nexus 4, now some four months old, is on top, with a new retail unit (still in its protective plastic) at the bottom. Note the little nub between the screw holes of the two phones.
This small design change has a couple of effects. It lifts phone up ever so slightly, allowing sound to escape the flush speaker. We can confirm that sounds are a little fuller and louder. Not a great deal, but we can tell. The change also should help keep the glass back from getting the little hairline scratches it's been prone to pick up.
And perhaps more important, it should keep the ultra-slick phone from sliding off any similarly slick surfaces.

The little nubs are just big enough to be felt when you're holding it. You'll know if you've got them on your phone.

Nexus 4 camera housing also gets a tweak

Another small change noticed regards the camera lens. There's a little less exposed area around the lens. It's unclear whether that's simply a design change, or if it helps with light leakage, or if it's just discrepancies in the manufacturing process. (We're working on tracking that down.) But it is noticeable, at least when you're looking at two phones side by side. Interesting is that in our old Nexus 4, the lens is centered in the hole -- it's definitely not in the new unit we picked up this week.

The football season may be over, but with 202 days to go before the next NFL game kicks off again, Google today announced that it has brought its Street View cameras into the Indianapolis Colts’ Lucas Oil Stadium. The new 360 degree imagery, Google Maps product manager Evan Rapoport writes, is “another example of how we’re working hard (and having fun!) building the most comprehensive, accurate and usable map of the world — complete with imagery from inside your favorite sporting venues.”
If you really love the Indianapolis Colts then (and given that I know nothing about football, I’m not sure how people feel about them), you can now “march out of the tunnel and down the field towards the end zone, just like Andrew Luck did all season.” Also included in the tour is a visit to the Colts’ locker room, the stadium’s three concourses and a number of suites, including the Quarterback Suite (a semi-private 200-seat “party room”), a Field Level Suite and a Loge-Level Suite (you can also just explorer all the empty beer and pretzel stands in the stadium, of course).
Because most people probably don’t search for “Lucas Oil Stadium,” despite the fact that the company paid $121 million for the naming rights, Google points out that you can also just look for “Colts Stadium” on Google Maps in your browser, on Android and in the iPhone app to see this new imagery. It’s not clear if Google plans to add more football stadiums to its collection any time soon.
For Google, of course, this isn’t the first stadium it took its street view cameras to. Before the 2010 World Cup in South Africa (where they played real football), Google introduced imagery of all of the stadiums on Google Maps. It has also driven its cameras around various race tracks and, most recently, into the Olympic venues in London.
